What is climate change and how can we stop it? Lets get into it...
There are tons of people who are trying to help and prevent the earth from dying because it's getting so hot and icebergs are melting. There are so many teens that are helping fight climate change. The one who started it all was Greta! Greta Thunberg is 16.
Many other millennials are helping to stop climate change and inviting their schoolmates to peacefully protest. Here is a list of young environmental activists that you can follow.
Fridays for Future is where students that are in public or private school spend the whole Friday or when school ends to protest about climate change. It is called Friday for Future because 1.) they protest on Friday and 2.) kids all around the world are protesting so they will be able to get past 20.
If you are reading this and you were born before 1984 chances are you didn’t have to worry about climate change when you were growing up. You had to worry about other important matters, such as war and financial crashes.
I just looked up climate change and the top stories on it were:
• I got a vasectomy because of climate change
• How Climate Change is erasing the past
• SoCalGas shouldn’t be using customer money to undermine state climate goals, critics say
Just these 3 very different articles have been posted in the last couple hours. I encourage you, if you can, to Google “Climate Change” and see what 3 articles come up.
Just this morning, my Mom received an email from easyJet telling her about their historic flight. It was the first flight that easyJet had lowered their carbon footprint! You can read the article here. They offset their carbon emissions by planting trees and making more environmental decisions. Sadly the people that were on the historic flight were probably asleep because it took off at 5:20 am! This was a great article and I learned SO many things from it, including that easyJet has reduced their carbon emissions per passenger by 33.6%!
Let's talk Tesla. Tesla is one of the only electric vehicle producers. They recently came out with their first pickup truck that look like something out of blade runner!
Doesn’t it look cool? They got a HUGE amount of press because they were showing how durable their windows were by throwing steel balls at the windows.
The windows shattered and then Elon Musk came back on stage and said “well I wasn’t expecting that”. The Cyber truck has a completely stainless steel outside, so it doesn’t have to be painted. It can hold 6 people and has a retractable back so you can have the trunk enclosed if you don’t want you tools, etc, to get wet.
Nio is also a car company that is fully electric. I saw one when I was in China and took a picture of it, I didn’t know that they were electric cars, I just thought the car looked cool.
If you look closely it has a barcode at the bottom. My friend tried to scan it but it was too blurry so we just forgot about it. She sent me an email a couple weeks ago and said that the company was Chinese. I looked into it and wow. This company has accomplished so many things as far as being electric. Nio is also involved with the FIA Formula E Championship, the first single-seater, all-electric racing series!
A cool thing in China is that it has a TON of electric cars. It costs so much to get a car there and maintain it you get a “discount” if you get an electric one! How you can tell if a car is electric in China: look at the license plate. If it’s green that is a fully electric car.
If you looked up how to produce less plastic you might find that you should invest in a reusable straw. In Italy they are using PASTA straws! Here is where you can read more about it.
Now let's talk about how climate change and how it’s even happening. Most of us are happy and eat healthy or try to. So what’s causing it? All the packaging! And the food that is coming in the plastic packaging. Lets talk about cow burps and farts. Yep, laugh all you want, but it’s what causes a bunch of methane gas to be released, and it's from cows burping/farting it. I am not trying to blame cows. The cows are raised on a farm that has a place where the cows can eat grass, sleep and poop. Cows eat the grass and it releases methane. It is said that a cow releases up to 200kg of methane a year! There are 1 billion cows on the planet. So 200 kilograms x 1,000,000,000=200 billion kilograms or 440,924,524,369.8 pounds a year! Then the cows that are on farms are sometimes used for ground beef, milk, a ribeye, etc. Humans eating red meat is not great but it sure is yummy!
