I made tortillas!

As I have started to be more eco friendly I have started making more of my own food. Tortillas are usually packaged in plastic at the store, so...

I made tortillas! I love tortillas and have a serious obsession for tacos, so it only made sense that I make them from scratch. They were super easy! It takes 30 minutes but you can freeze them and just fry them up. It took about twice as long because I was taking pictures. Here we go!

They actually have big one of these on Amazon, right here!

Ingredients:
2 cups of all purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
¾ cups water
3 tablespoons olive oil

I had all of these things!
I took a medium sized metal bowl and put all of the flour, water, salt and oil inside.

I had to pour everything in with my left hand which was seriously hard.
Mix it until it is sticky but well incorporated. It should look like this: Thumbs up!

Then you need to *knead* the dough until it is smooth enough. It should not look like this

But smooth and round like this

Then you put a cloth over it and let it rest for 10 minutes. It shouldn’t get 2 times bigger just some time to relax after being pushed around. For the next 5 minutes I cleaned the kitchen and talked with my mom. Make sure you leave the flour out, you still need it!  This is the kitchen before I cleaned

And after!

Then when you have a clean surface sprinkle some flour and uncover your dough from its nap.

Divide it into 8 balls. I got 9 and all of them were medium sized. If you want small ones make 12 and if you want BIG make 5 balls.

They should look like this

I found that smashing my lower palm into it did a better job than using a roller.

When you have all of your little tortillas flattened,  get out a medium sized pan and turn it to medium heat. DO NOT PUT OIL IN THE PAN. The olive oil from the dough gives it the oiliness, so it is not necessary.

If you think that your tortillas don’t look as good as mine, take a look at my first one versus my 3rd.

The tortilla should start getting a little see through yellowness in the middle

This shows that the olive oil is being released and you did the dough perfectly! When the dough starts getting little bubbles on top, flip it over!

A lot of my tortillas wound up looking like Salvador Dali clocks with no minute and hour hands, so I put some butter on it!

Once the tortillas are done eat them immediately! Or if you are making them for someone else, serve them right away. Make sure if you made them for someone else you have a little bite too! I made some eggs, put queso fresco and cilantro on it. It was so good! I ate 4 of these and was full but you may need to eat more or less, depends on how hungry you are for tortillas! If you want to make tortilla chips cut them in heart shapes and cook them in the oven at 350 degrees fahrenheit (176 celsius) for 10 minutes.

I had so much fun making tortillas and will be making them instead of buying them in the future! These taste the same as store bought ones but fresher!
