When I grow up...

When I was 4 a person asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I had a bunch of different ideas but felt that I had to pick one. I said I wanted to be a ballerina because that's what my best friend
wanted to be. Now, 9 years later I want nothing to do with pink or skirts, therefore I will probably never be a ballerina.

When "adults,"ask you what you want to be when  grow up it's more than one answer. Sometimes kids say what they think the adult wants to hear. I know 2 people that said what they thought their parents or adults that asked them what they wanted to be. The 2 that I am talking about are my dad and my friend. When my dad was 6-7 he started telling his parents friends and his parents that he wanted to be a doctor. 11 years later and he was applying for medical school and got accepted to the University of Michigan. My grandparents were so happy that one of their sons was going to be a doctor! That put a lot of pressure on my dad and after 2 years of medical school he dropped out. He became a theatre designer/installer and he loved it. But it took a lot longer because he was telling everyone what they wanted to hear. Then for my friend, she is not a doctor yet but she dad really wants her to be one. She comes from 3 generations of dentists and her dad is a winemaker but her brother is studying to be a dentist.

She's a teenager yet but her dad has it all planned for her and she wants to go to Stanford or U.C Davis. You should never limit yourself or your child to do just one thing in life, that cuts off tons of creativity! A couple years ago my dads best friend's mom asked me what a wanted to be, that point in time I was really into arguing and my mom said I would make a spectacular lawyer, so that what I said I wanted to be. Then 1 year later she asked me what I wanted to be and I said a flight attendant, so I could travel all around the world, she said: "Oh, I thought you were going to be a lawyer when you grew up". I had totally forgotten about being a lawyer and had moved on to 10 other things that I wanted to be that year. What I got out of that talk was more than you could ever know, I learned that she thought I would stick to my word and would limit me to getting a job working there for 40 years and then retiring and then dying. What kind of lifestyle is that? Sticking to one thing for your whole life and not doing ANYTHING else. If I'm always switching careers then does that mean I will never be grown up? That I can't keep a job because I'm not good at it, or that I want to be the dumbest person in the room so I can continue learning things? If you do the same thing every day from 9-5, 6-3 or whatever it is, and you're not doing new things that excite YOU, then you are getting paid (hopefully) for doing something that you don't enjoy doing for 8 hours a day. If your favorite thing to do is watch Netflix and chill, think about how you can turn it into a career!

Can you learn about a film or how to become a television writer and write the shows for Netflix or film them? Yes! If that's what you want to do then do it! If you want to be a ballerina and your 16 and have had no experience what so ever on ballet and you know that the really successful ballerinas start when their 4 or 6 and they have 10-12 more years of experience than you do then you can see what they have learned and look forward to being that good and be competitive and try to learn as much as you can as fast possible, here's the catch you want to try to perfect each thing you work on to become the best and do that for 100 other different things you do in a day! I can not tell you how many times I have been asked what I want to be when I grow up in a day and I give a different answer each time they ask. People who are retired and have done the same thing for 30 years and then retire will not understand when you list multiple things or you say "I don't know!". When someone asks me that question I say" I want to be happy". Most of the time they have a really confused look on their face and say " I mean where you want to work" or a variation of that. I can do whatever I want to do (preferably while making money) as long as I'm happy. You don't have to say the exact same thing you can put whatever you want to be or ever you want to feel when you work. Now that being said if you have your own business or you're the manager of one of the 36,000+ locations of McDonalds and you have a bad day, you need to find a way to make it better. Maybe

If you manage your own business or you have a break coming up in your work shift than you can take a 10-minute break and try to do some Yoga to clear your head and let all the stress dissolve from your mind and body, aka bad vibes! If your a manager or whatever career choose to, make sure you love it and it's something that if you get tired of it you can switch professions easily and have a bright future. What are you going to say when the next person asks you what you want to be when you grow up?
