going to lucky's market
I had done a little research about this place before and from the looks of it, it had a nice bulk section so we stopped by. When we walked in, I saw it. The bulk section (cue the angels singing)! It was and still is big. Like I said, this was not my first rodeo with this amazing grocery store but the 2nd time buying bulk items (the first I got a jar of popcorn, so still inexperienced). Anyway, we went in, walked around for a few minutes still in awe of all the bulkiness.
They have loose soap! Sorry just wanted to say that.

I brought jars this time and we decided to make some lavender truffles. We got the lavender buds (it was seeing the lavender that made us want to make the truffles, (we did not have this thought beforehand) in my cute little jar that we got from the Falkland islands when we got some diddly dee jam. But first I got the tare of the jar (I weighed it) and took a picture of it. This is very important. If you get to excited and don't know the weight of the jar when it's empty, you will be charged a bit more!

Then we got some canola oil! Now we calculated it and it will be cheaper to get canola oil at Costco, Sam’s Club or any type of bulk store that has canola oil packaged. But, for the time being we have some un-packaged canola oil that we will be using and loving. We wandered over into the oat section and found some mung beans (I know, what I coincidence, mung beans and oatmeal) so we got a bit of those. I thought, wait don’t we need chocolate for the truffles? So we got some dark chocolate wafers (tip: getting chocolate chips unpackaged is cheaper). Then we walked over to the deli section and looked at their Sushi Tuesday sushi and then wandered into the beauty aisle. We went to a different Lucky’s last time and they may have had this but I didn’t see it or they may have just not had it, sob. They had a natural bulk section!

I saw so many things! Frankincense (it makes me sneeze, but still!), beeswax pellets, rose buds, peppermint sprigs, catnip, bentonite clay, etc. It felt like I was taking a potions class from Snape at Hogwarts. But to make the Harry Potter experience even more real there was a very informative girl named Taylor who knew tons of facts and remedies that the natural bulk items could do. It was self serve but it felt like her area (so we did not intrude). First she had us smell some peppermint sprigs.
Which smelled like fresh toothpaste (I liked the smell but maybe you won’t).

And then she explained about the other items for 20 minutes. I will definitely be getting some catnip for my cat, Pumpkin and some bentonite clay for my face. But we got some dried beet powder for our chapstick! She said that it would give it a nice rosy tint depending on how much we put in. After our shopping spree we checked out. One of the fun things about being (trying to be) zero waste is having other people try to work with you. We had Ethan as our cashier and he was very helpful but had not done many transactions with other peoples jars. We finished and since we brought our own bags they gave us 10 cents for each bag (we had 2) to use for future purchases at their store or to donate to one of 3 foundations. eWe decided to donate! He gave us chips to put in a fun slot thing but before we did that we picked our charities. My mom picked an organization that made sure kids had school supplies and I picked one that helped kids that were abused at home, go to school and have a safe place to live. It was a very good grocery stop and we will definitely be going here again. We got in the car and i got the receipt from one of the bags to see what the total was and it was $51! That seems like a LOT for what we got. We also got some baby carrots but that wouldn’t add that much to it.

Then I looked at all of the items and the dried beet powder was $30 bucks! And then my mom looked and it was for 0.65 pounds and we had gotten 2 or 3 ounces! I said “Should we go back in?”. Cause that is pretty steep for some beet powder. And then my mom started looking at all the other things that we got in our containers and they were also more. We decided to go back into the store and say something. We found our cashier and told him, he then brought his manager over and we figured out that he had not subtracted the weight from the containers! I had taken pictures of how much the jars weighed before I had put things in them thankfully and we sorted it all out. So, if you ever want to go zero waste shopping and bring your own container… Please make sure that you have a picture of the jar being weighed or the weight of the jar on top of the lid (If you don’t you will hear me saying it while you’re walking around the store)! The grand total after we were refunded was $20.79! Dang, it was definitely worth going back in and saving a little bit more than $30, am I right?
Here are some of the other amazing things that Lucky's has...

6 types of granola, woah....
They also have spices

Have you ever made a recipe that needed a weird spice but you didn't have it? You go to the store and buy the spice the last time I did this it was $7! You can get the exact amount of the exotic or regular spice you want and it's a very reasonable price!
They even have raspberry pretzels

I tried one of theses and they were actually really good and tasted fresh (plus they look really cool).

If you are one of the rare people that like coffee they have tons of different roasts and flavors. They also have a coffee grinder so you don't have to grind them yourself!
All the mochi that I have seen in my long long life (;) has been heavily packaged but then...

I haven't tried these yet but there's always tomorrow!
They also have
All in bulk!
The key to being zero waste is to unconsciously bring your containers to the store and remember to decline a plastic straw, because it's simply part of your everyday life!
