Going to Seattle and being zero waste
We finally started traveling and but I had a new “thing” in my life. Zero waste. You may think that being zero waste does not affect how you live but it does. Since I am just starting out I have to think of every possible way that I can make waste. Here is the catch, I have to do it before it happens. For example, if I forget to ask for no straw in my drink and it comes with one, I'm kind of screwed. It’s not like they can take it out (well they could but they would just throw it away, which is not very zero waste!). Another thing that my dad pointed out and when we got further into our China trip was you have to explain about zero waste to every single person who you are buying something from that comes in plastic. You have to be enthusiastic and detailed about it (but not have it take more than a minute to explain) so the person knows what it is and why you don’t want a bag or a container to eat food out of.

We have started traveling after a year and a half of working and no holidays. I was and still am very excited to embark on this journey. I want to be environmentally friendly but also have fun. It has been a struggle the past couple days to not produce single use plastic, even if I decline it. So today after a 5 hour flight from Atlanta to Seattle I had not produced any trash except a napkin (which is compostable), the drive in a shuttle to the airport and the shared C02 from the airplane with 150+ people. But my family had snacks and beverages that were soon disposed of. And I am not hating on my family!

We arrived at the Seattle airport. We got to the food court and there were 3 bins for disposing of things in the main area. They had a trash bin, a recycling bin and a composting bin! They were all the same size too. We decided to eat at the Dungeness Bay (a seafood house) and ordered some drinks. I asked for no straws in the drinks and our waitress told us that their straws are made out of corn! I kinda wanted to get a straw just to see what it was like but decided against it. Then our beverages came. My mom got coffee, they put a plastic spoon in it and brought the creamer in a little metal pitcher. I looked up the model and the brand of the spoon and it is made of polystyrene which sometimes can be recycled!I looked more into the company and the spoon was made out of 70% recycled materials! So I did the happy dance in my head!

Then my dad asked for some lemons to put in his coke. They were brought out in a plastic container. Ughh. But I looked on the bottom of it and it is a number 6 PS recycle sign, and the lemon wedges are compostable! Then we ordered some clam chowder and the jumbo fish fish! The jumbo fish dish is clams, shrimp, cod and some more fish that comes in a dish! We chilled there for a bit and then flew to China. I would definitely like to visit Seattle again for a longer period than a flight layover!
