Karate
Have you ever seen a Bruce Lee movie, where they fight and have all these awesome moves and they are super fit, and you just dream a bit about being able to do all those cool moves and look super fit? Well, that's what did almost every Friday. Since I was 5 every Friday I would have a cool Bruce Lee fight and be kicking butt! Then when I was 9 I was taken out of Martial Arts to travel and not only did I lose contact with my friends but I lost a lot of muscle mass and forgot all the forms. I am one belt away from a black belt (a pume belt).
This was written a couple months ago and I am now proud to day I have a black belt.
My parents have always envisioned me wearing a black belt and I have as well. So, by the end of 2019, I hope to have a black belt around my waist that has my first and last name in Korean embroidered in gold thread. Being a black belt means being fit, aware of your surroundings, being respectful and being able to protect myself when multiple people try to attack me. So, now what I do every Friday is put on a bunch of pads so I get about half as many bruises on my legs then I would if I didn't wear them. I practice my techniques on all the people that I am put with and they practice on me. No matter what rank anyone is they learn something from sparring and they get to perfect their technique and get exercise!
We don't take our opponents down in wrist locks we are only allowed to kick and punch. In other forms of martial arts, they focus on self-defense like Hapkido and variations of Tae kwon do. This version of Tae kwon do focuses on kicking, forms and being mentally and physically fit. When I was in Michigan practicing Martial Arts they focused more on if someone grabs your wrist, how do you get out of it? After learning 10+ techniques we had to think of different ways to get out of a wrist grab if were on the spot and under a lot of pressure. And that was so much fun an Going to both places have made me a totally different person, if I would've stayed at an after-school program that had me doing my homework (I did finish my homework while doing martial arts) and hanging out with other kids I would have been a lot less respectful and not be nearly as confident. If you are interested in becoming the next Bruce Lee (maybe not dying at 33 from a heart attack and not being in the movies) and learning how to kick butt then you may want to consider Hapkido or Krav maga.
Hapkido is great for the mind and makes you aware of all the things you can do. For me it opened up a whole bunch of other ways to kick and take down your opponent, this may not be the same for you because Martial arts effects everyone differently. Then Krav maga is one of the most deadly martial arts and I want to learn it to learn more about street fighting. If you want to get into a martial art make sure you do your research about different kinds them. Pick one that supports you and helps you become a better fighter and a better person.
