TOP TEN ways TO REDUCE WASTE AT GROCERY STORES

When you go grocery shopping hat do you look for/ Do you look for the cheapest deal? The organic more expensive but better for you stuff? Well what I look for in a grocery store is what has the least amount of plastic wrapped around it. Some places package things that don’t need to be packaged in a styrofoam bed and a couple layers of sedan wrap, such as an un-peeled banana! When other countries can effortlessly not use plastic and be extremely environmentally friendly because they just get what they want and the environment that they are in is not using plastic. Now of you didn’t know already in different areas of the world they have different standards but what if we made most standards in grocery stores package less? Here are 10 ways that I think grocery stores can be more environmentally friendly:

1. They can have signs at the cart stop that remind you to bring your reusable bags so that you don’t forget them in the car and by plastic or buy more reusable ones. At Publix they have this and it has helped me so many times!

2. They can charge for plastic or be like my semi local Lucky’s store and not offer plastic at all! They did this in California and plastic went down SO much. Our local store also start putting on their plastic bags that they could be used up to 125 times!

3. They can have a bulk section for trail mixes, candy, etc, where you bring your own container and can purchase loose goods

4. Their Deli option can have vegan meats, cheeses, smoked meats, raw poultry and fish that have biodegradable packaging so you don’t have to worry about getting salmonella when you bring your own container. And when they give you samples they are just handing it to you  instead of putting it on a plastic sheet that is used for about 20 seconds and stays in landfill for 300+ years!

5. They can have mesh bags to put mass quantities of fruit or vegetables in. And if you don’t own mesh bags or forgot them you can pay $1 for each one you use and get refunded when you come back with them or they can keep them because that's how much they already cost! Not only does this force customers to come back but you don’t have to buy the plastic ones that everyone gets for free (you save money!)

6. Have recipes that are texted instead of printed out. Not only will this be more environmentally friendly put you will have everything documented online so you won’t have to worry about loose your receipt!

7. The bakery section can be self serve and be put in your own container

For example, I would pick the one with a face.

8. The eggs can be loose and you pick out how much you want and put it in the padded cooler that they have by the egg station

9. Their milk containers can be metal and they can have a refill station in the store. Or a milk man or women can come and pick up your milk every (how often do you go through milk), refill them and bring them back (one less thing to worry about). Did you know that millennials in England are doing this?

10. The coffee section can be bulk, with a wide varieties from the world. They can have a grinder so that you can bring it home to your coffee machine to be put in a refillable capsule!

These are just some ways that a grocery store can change. Not to mention purchasing form more eco friendly places! But try to make a difference and just remember… Be the change that YOU want to see in the world!
