why do we love snacks?

Why does it vary so much on how people eat. Some people live just on caffeine, chips, cookies "junk food". Some people eat good sized portions in the morning and just get so overwhelmed with cravings that they just eat a bunch of things in their fridge or pantry and then regret it later when they have a stomach ache. Some people eat healthy for the entire day and for the rest of their lives. Some people have a good meal that they think will make them gain ten pounds (which is not physically possible) so they go in the bathroom after they have eaten and throw it all up. I could say hundreds of "Some people" things and I still wouldn't cover everyone because "Some people" do the things and "Some people" do drastically different things". But why is it most common that we all have 3 meals a day? Why not 4, 2 or 1? Why are we not like dogs? Have 2 cups a day twice a day. Or different depending on how many calories you burn and how active you are. Why are snacks so popular in the United States?

I think it's because Americans are used to always not being hungry and when they have a small little "hunger pain" in their stomach they think "OMG, I'm hungry I have to eat something so I'm not hungry" and that's how snacks were made. Because we didn't want to spoil our next 1/3 meals so we would just have a little something to tide us over till we had breakfast, lunch or dinner. What if every time we felt a little hunger in our stomach (or mostly head saying that leftover pizza in the fridge sounds really good right now) we thought "man I am going to enjoy my (next meal (that is not a snack!) and I can look forward to it every time I feel a little hunger". Something a little different though, hopefully not exactly like that. If you want one of your meals to be just potato chips thats fine but have some protein for your next meals so your body doesn't get mad.

I remember there being a "snack time" or a "milk break" when I was in public school before lunch and after breakfast (or if a kid didn't have breakfast then the milk break would be their breakfast). Is that common in France or other countries? I know that it's popular to have a little chocolate or something sweet in the middle of the day for a special treat. So whatever you decide to do is fine. If you need snacks in the middle of the day because you are actually hungry and it's not because you know there is something yummy in your fridge then go for it! A good tip that I use a lot when I want to have some more food after I have had a meal is waiting 20 minutes and then asking yourself "am I really still hungry?" (the suspense is horrible but it works!).
