Going Zero Waste Shopping for the first time!

Margaret is my adopted Grandma. She's my Dads best friends mom. I think she is the best person ever. I can do almost whatever I want to do when I’m around her. She's the most caring and generous human I have ever met. We were driving back to her house and we stopped at Neimans (a grocery store in Michigan). The last time I had been here was more than a year ago and I was not zero waste, so I hadn’t looked at all of the bulk food. We walked in and I had my bags and containers. We headed towards the caramel corn smell. They were making it fresh and it smelled like Christmas but it was October! When we wandered over there, we also found part of the bulk section! They had a whole case with 20 types of cookies!

We got 3 kinds! In 2 Mr. Lid containers. We got a knock off of the coconut girl scout ones (these were delicious), Chocolate chip cookies (stale, but good heated up with butter) and Vanilla wafers (stale but I was told it was scrumptious with coffee). Margaret also found some different wafers that were caramel that we compared to the vanilla. The caramel was too sweet for me but yummy. After I could contain myself from all the cookies. We got some banana chips in a silicone ziploc.

They also had an assortment of fruits, flours, chocolate chips, oatmeal, pretty much what I eat!

Then we got two cantaloupes and headed to a different part of the store. We found the “bakery” section and I got 3 tiny loaves of bread in a silicone bag for 75 cents. We were almost about to check out and then I saw it… A bulk dog treat kiosk. They had so many flavors and they were all unpackaged. If Mango (our dog) was with us I would have gotten him a bunch, but he was in a different state and we would have had to bring it on a plane, etc.

Isn’t that set up beautiful? It’s like angels started singing and lights were surrounding it when I saw it. We checked out and the cashier was very nice and thought it was great that a young person was being environmentally friendly. Occasionally people would bring their own bags but not often. No one had ever brought their own container! I was the first one, I have never been the first at doing that!

I convinced Margaret that we should take a photo in front of Neimans to remember this historic moment, but she thought it was hilarious.

Still got the picture!

We snacked on the cookies on the way home and picked up some yummy squash that was being sold at someones house.

It was only 25 cents for the squash! That is so cheap!

All and all I thought this was a pretty good haul. See that rhymes ;). I thought this was a blast, try and look to see what your local grocer has in bulk or ask at the deli if something can be put in your container!
